How Back Injury Affects Javelin Throwers: The year 2025 has been full of difficulties so far for India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj. After the World Championship, he suffered a serious back injury, due to which his entire focus is currently on recovery and rehabilitation. According to the Athletics Federation of India, Neeraj has not yet decided when and where he will start the season.
According to FI spokesperson Adil Sumariwala, Neeraj is currently on a break and recovery from injury is his priority. He clearly said that at present it is more important than the season opener that the player is completely fit.
How did the back injury occur?
Neeraj Chopra himself had told that while throwing shot put during training in September, he suddenly got a sharp shock on the left side of his back. After this he started having difficulty even walking. An MRI was done in Prague for investigation, which revealed a disc related problem. In a high-intensity sport like javelin throw, the back not only supports the body but also directly affects the performance. In such a situation, back injury can affect the player’s strength, balance and throwing speed.
What is a disk problem?
The disc is actually a cushion-like structure present between the bones of the spine, which tolerates shocks. When there is too much pressure or stress on them, they can bulge outward, which is called herniated disc. According to medical research, in such a situation, there can be pressure on the nerves, due to which pain, numbness and weakness can be felt in the back and legs. In many cases this pain spreads to the legs in the form of sciatica.
Why can early return be dangerous?
Health experts believe that returning to the field in a hurry after any serious injury increases the risk of re-injury manifold. Research shows that returning without being not only physically but mentally prepared can also be harmful. For this reason both Neeraj Chopra and FI do not want to take any risk. He is currently undergoing rehab under the supervision of his coach and javelin legend John Zelezny.
Recovery is very important
According to sports medicine experts, proper physiotherapy, strength training and adequate rest are very important in cases of back injury. Returning without being completely fit can be harmful not only for your career but also for your long-term health.
