Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut condemned the central government’s decision to honor former Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari with Padma Bhushan. Condemning it on Monday (26 January), he alleged that Koshyari had murdered democracy and the Constitution in the state by toppling the Uddhav Thackeray-led Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

The central government on Sunday (January 25) announced the award of Padma Bhushan to former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Koshyari, who served as the Governor of Maharashtra from 2019 to 2023.

Koshyari had insulted Chhatrapati Shivaji – Raut

Speaking to reporters, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said the Mahayuti government, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde, should also condemn the decision to award Padma Bhushan to Koshyari, who had insulted Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and social reformers Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule.

Koshyari murdered democracy and constitution – Raut

Raut said, “He (Koshyari) murdered democracy and the Constitution and brought down the Uddhav Thackeray-led government.” He claimed that Koshyari wanted to bring down the majority government of Uddhav Thackeray and bring the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state. The former governor had to face criticism for his comment that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was an ‘ideal of old times’.

CM Devendra Fadnavis congratulated Bhagat Singh Koshyari

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis congratulated Koshyari for this honour. Fadnavis said in a post on ‘X’, “Hearty congratulations to former Maharashtra Governor Honorable Bhagat Singh Koshyari ji on being honored with the Padma Bhushan Award for 2026. His illustrious journey in public life and his unwavering contribution to governance and nation building are a source of inspiration for generations.
