In a major change in its strategic deployment, the US Navy has removed the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group from the Indo-Pacific region and now deployed it in the Middle East. After this step, the stir in international politics has intensified and it is being speculated that US President Donald Trump may order military action against Iran. This deployment has taken place at a time when global pressure is continuously increasing regarding anti-government protests in Iran and relations between America and Iran are already extremely tense.
USS Abraham Lincoln, known as CVN-72, is a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. It leads the US Navy’s Carrier Strike Group-3. It is counted among the most powerful naval forces in the world. On 19 January this strike group passed through the Strait of Malacca. During this time, three state-of-the-art Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers were deployed for its protection, which include USS Frank E. Petersen Jr, USS Spruance and USS Michael Murphy. The American Central Command i.e. CENTCOM has described this deployment as a step taken with the aim of maintaining regional security and stability in the Middle East.

Trump administration increased pressure on Iran
President Donald Trump has linked this military gathering to the ongoing nationwide protests and human rights violations in Iran. Anti-government protests have been going on in Iran since December, in which claims of thousands of deaths and arrests are being made, although the Iranian government has been vehemently denying these figures. Trump had said while talking to the media that a huge naval force of America is moving towards that area and it is possible that it may not have to be used, but America is fully prepared for every situation. This statement is being seen as America’s show of force policy, which includes both military pressure and strategic uncertainty.
Pentagon increased military activities
With the deployment of USS Abraham Lincoln, the Pentagon has further strengthened its military presence around Iran. Additional fighter aircraft have been deployed in the area and logistics support has also been increased through military cargo flights. With this, air strikes, precise missile strikes and strong deterrence options have become available to America.
Iran’s warning and growing concern in the Middle East
Iran has reacted strongly to the American deployment and warned that if any military attack is made on it, its response will be decisive and harsh. After this warning, concerns have increased throughout the Middle East regarding oil supply, security of sea routes and regional stability.
Is the path to diplomacy still open?
Despite the tense situation, America has indicated that the option of talks has not been completely closed yet. A senior American official has said that Iran knows very well what the conditions for talks will be and now it is up to Tehran to decide.
