Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has now retracted from what he said at the Davos Summit last week. US Finance Secretary Scott Besant has confirmed this. He told that on Monday (January 26, 2026), Mark Carney had a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, in which he retracted what he had said during the Davos speech.
Last week, Mark Carney gave a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in which he targeted America. Obviously, Trump was very angry after hearing this and he canceled the invitation to Mark Carney to join the Board of Peace. Also threatened to impose 100 percent tariff.
Scott Besant says that Mark Carney had a phone conversation with Trump, in which he retracted his comments made in Davos. In an interview on Fox News, he said, ‘I was with President Trump in the Oval Office today. Trump spoke to Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Carney completely retracted his comments. Scott Besant said that it is obvious that Canada is dependent on America and if Trump imposes 100 percent tariff on Canada, it will be a big disaster for it.
Mark Carney also received a standing ovation for the speech he gave in Davos. However, because of this he also had to face Trump’s displeasure. Carney had said in Davos, ‘The world’s middle powers will have to unite and counter the pressure of the big powers.’ Without naming anyone, he said, ‘Superpowers have now started using trade as a weapon. ‘Tariffs are being exploited as a weapon of pressure to coerce the financial system and supply chain vulnerabilities.’
Mark Carney had said, ‘Middle powers should work together because if you are not together at the table, you will be seen on the menu.’ After this speech, Trump canceled his invitation to join the Board of Peace. The Board of Peace is an international organization proposed by Trump, whose purpose is to monitor peace and reconstruction after the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. A contribution of one billion dollars is required for permanent membership of the board, while countries that do not pay will get a three-year term. Regarding the Board of Peace, Mark Carney had said that he wants to join it, but he has not yet been able to take a decision regarding the terms of fees.
