Diabetes And Orthostatic Hypotension: Suddenly, as soon as you get up from the chair, you feel dizzy, darkness appears before your eyes or you feel like falling. If this happens to you too, then do not make the mistake of taking it lightly. This is certainly a common problem, but there may be a medical reason behind it. This condition is called orthostatic hypotension or postural hypotension. This happens when the body is unable to adjust the blood pressure quickly enough to suddenly stand up from a sitting or lying position and adequate blood is not able to reach the brain. Due to this, dizziness, blurred vision or feeling like fainting occurs.
What do experts say?
According to Dr. Abhishek Kumar, Neurologist, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, New Delhi, as soon as we stand, blood moves towards the legs due to gravity. Normally the body’s autonomic nervous system immediately compensates for this by contracting the nerves and increasing the heart rate. But if this reaction slows down, dizziness may occur. According to dietician and weight management expert, while standing, blood gets accumulated in the legs, due to which less oxygen reaches the brain. Drinking enough water, maintaining electrolyte balance and standing slowly can reduce this problem.
For what reason does this happen?
Dehydration, anemia, staying in bed for a long time, some medicines and reduced reaction capacity of the body with increasing age can also cause dizziness. Research has also revealed that a sudden drop in blood pressure within the first minute of standing may be associated with the risk of dementia. People whose systolic blood pressure dropped 20 mmHg or more within 30 seconds of standing were found to have a higher risk of dementia in the future.
When is it necessary to see a doctor?
Experts say that if a person feels dizzy repeatedly while standing, then he should definitely inform the doctor and get his blood pressure checked while standing. Especially in the elderly, it can increase the risk of falls, bone fractures and serious injuries. To prevent this, it is important to stand slowly, drink enough water, do leg exercises, make slip-proof arrangements in the house and, if necessary, get the medicines reviewed by the doctor. If attention is paid in time, this problem can be controlled to a great extent. We can control it with changes in lifestyle.
