I replied, ‘Uncle Jaan, I cannot learn singing from you.’ Elder Ghulam Ali Khan was very surprised to hear this and when he asked the reason, I told him that I have to carry forward my father’s legacy. Hearing this he became emotional and his eyes filled with tears. He said, May Allah fulfill all your wishes.
Respecting the feelings, said “no”
Jasraj later told that Khan Saheb’s crying showed the depth of his feelings. He was such a great master that even wishing to make anyone his disciple was a big thing. And he told that Pandit Jasraj was already a disciple of his elder brother Pandit Maniram and was following the tradition of Mewati Gharana. The special thing was that he wanted to carry forward his father’s legacy, so he refused, but this refusal was full of respect.
