The story of Jaya Ekadashi is related to King Indra and Gandharva. According to the story, once Apsaras were dancing in Indra’s court. Gandharva Pushpvant, his daughter Pushpvati and Chitrasen’s wife Malini and her son Malyvan were also present in the meeting. At that time, Pushpavati became fascinated after seeing Malyavan and sexual feelings arose in her mind. Pushpavati captivated Malyvan with her looks, beauty and gestures. Here both of them became engrossed in lust.
Then King Indra ordered a dance to separate them. Both of them started dancing but due to being lustful, they were not able to dance properly. After this, Devraj Indra, Gandharva Malyavan and Pushpavati got angry. Indra cursed both of them to become vampires. After the curse, both of them reached the mortal world and then came into vampire form and started wandering on earth. After years of wandering, Gandharva met a sage. Gandharva and Pushpavati asked the sage about the solution to get rid of vampires.
The sage told both of them the solution to perform Jaya Ekadashi of Magh Shukla. After this, Gandharva and Pushpavati observed the fast of Jaya Ekadashi as per the rituals and as a result of the good results of the fast, they got freedom from the vampire species. Therefore, it is believed that a person who observes this fast methodically, recites this sacred story and follows the rules of Ekadashi fast, enjoys all kinds of pleasures and attains a place in Vaikuntha Loka.
