After Gautam Gambhir became the coach, something happened with the Indian cricket team which had never happened before. Whitewash in Test at home by New Zealand, lowest score in home Test (46), biggest defeat in Test (408 runs), losing ODI series to Sri Lanka for the first time in 27 years etc. Although under Gambhir’s coaching, India created many histories and also won Asia Cup and Champions Trophy titles, but critics targeted Gambhir after every defeat. When people demanded his removal from the post of coach, many people said that someone else should be made the coach in Tests. There were some reports that Gambhir’s future will be considered after the T20 World Cup 2026. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia rejected these rumors outright.
In an interview given to Sportstar, Devjit Saikia said on Gautam Gambhir’s criticism that people have every right to express their opinion. But BCCI has capable people to take decisions on these matters. He said, “In this country of 140 crore people, everyone considers themselves a cricket expert. Everyone will have their own opinion. This is a democratic country, where no one can be silenced. Everyone including the media is free to give their opinion. From former cricketers to social media, there is speculation everywhere.”
The BCCI secretary further said, “The truth is that the board has a dedicated cricket committee, which includes former cricketers. They are the ones who take decisions. We have 5 selectors for selection, who are qualified. Any final decision is taken by these committees and selectors only.”
In an interview, former cricketer Manoj Tiwari had said a big thing about the coaching future of Gautam Gambhir. He had said that if the Indian team does not win the T20 World Cup in 2026, then the board should take a big and difficult decision like removing the coach.
T20 World Cup 2027 will be organized from 7th February, which is being jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. A total of 20 teams are participating in it, which have been divided into 4 groups of 5 each.
