The Supreme Court has decided to keep the UGC regulation notified in 2012 in force for now. Reactions have come from Congress and Samajwadi Party regarding this. Both parties have called it a setback for the government and a victory for the constitutional role of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court has ordered to keep the 2012 regulation in force for the time being in matters related to UGC. After this decision, political rhetoric has intensified. Opposition parties allege that the government was taking decisions that divided the society, which the Supreme Court stopped in time.
Government wants to mislead- Rajeev Rai
Samajwadi Party MP Rajiv Rai raised questions on the intentions of the government. He said, “The government wants to divert attention. It does not do any work which is for public welfare. If the policy and intentions of the government were right, this would not have happened.”
SP MP Pushpendra Saroj reacted to the introduction and subsequent roll back of UGC. He said, “Somewhere in the Constitution it was written earlier that there should be no anti-discrimination. But what we saw today has now been rolled back. I would like to tell the government that they themselves are confused as to whom they are standing with.” He said that Samajwadi Party stands strongly with the fight of PDA and the future decisions will also be seen from the same perspective.
Government sets fire – Pramod Tiwari
Along with this, Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari openly welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court. He said, “It is the duty of the government to extinguish any fire. But this organization of BJP creates struggle in the name of class, caste and religion. This was the effort. The Supreme Court recognized their intention, recognized their black act and has imposed a stay, so I thank the Supreme Court.”
Both Congress and Samajwadi Party say that this decision of the Supreme Court raises questions on the policies of the government. The opposition is calling it a victory for constitutional values and equal rights, while the government is being accused of trying to divide the society.
