Delhi Police SWAT Commando Case: The tragic death of 27-year-old SWAT commando Kajal Chaudhary of Delhi Police has raised big questions. The family has alleged that Kajal was brutally beaten by her husband. In the meantime, let us know how difficult the training of a SWAT commando is and what one has to do to become a commando.
no direct recruitment
SWAT units are elite forces and there is no direct recruitment from outside. Only those people who are already working in the police force can dream of becoming SWAT commandos. Candidates have to first complete regular police training and work in active duty for a few years.
Screening based on service and fitness
The selection process starts with a very rigorous screening. Candidates are shortlisted on the basis of their service record, discipline, physical conditioning and medical fitness. Only those who have a clean record and consistent performance move to the next stage where the real test begins.
Physical and Psychological Testing
Shortlisted candidates have to undergo rigorous physical and psychological tests. This includes endurance run, long jump, obstacle course and strength test. It is equally important to check mental strength. In this, the candidates are evaluated on how they take decisions under pressure, fear, stress and difficult situations.
This training is very difficult. The training period for Delhi Police SWAT is approximately 10 months. It involves basic and advanced drill continuously for about 9 months. Trainees lift 20-25 kg of weight and do long distance running, rock climbing and even parachute exercises.
lack of sleep and extreme fatigue
One of the most difficult aspects of this training is controlled sleep deprivation. A trainee can get only three to four hours of sleep for a long time. This prepares them to work effectively during real life operations.
Let us tell you that during this process, about 70% to 80% of the candidates are left out at the time of selection and training. Only a small part is able to complete this training successfully.
