Jeet Singh Negi, the folk bearer of mountain culture, pioneer of Garhwali songs and creator, worked to convey the soul of this Devbhoomi to the people through words, tunes and theatre.

Jeet Singh Negi was born on 2 February 1925 in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand. During the World War era, the childhood of the Pahari boy was spent among the soldiers of Verma. Even the smell of gunpowder could not erase the memories of mountains, villages, Panghat and Khasiyaris from the mind of this child. When Jeet Singh Negi used to recite folk songs, the desire to go to the mountains would become stronger in people’s minds.

It is said that Jeet Singh Negi was greatly influenced by the singer of that era, KL Sehgal. That is why he adopted Sehgal’s rhythm, but kept the original Pahari. He became not just a composer or folk singer, but a true worshiper and conductor of Pahari culture. He composed compositions like ‘Geet Ganga’, ‘Jaunal Magri’, ‘Cham Ghunghru Bajla’, ‘Maletha Ki Kool’ and ‘Bhari Bhool’.

The prevalence and popularity of his folk songs was also certified by the Indian Census Survey Department. In the village survey of the Census Department of the Government of India, the song of Jeet Singh Negi was also included among the most popular folk songs. With the aim of introducing the new generation to the compositions of Jeet Singh Negi, Narendra Singh Negi rhythmized the songs sung by him in his own voice.

Narendra Singh Negi, a renowned folk singer and musician of Uttarakhand, himself sang his songs. Narendra Singh Negi told in an interview, “Once I was doing a program in Dubai, there were some elderly people there. They told me that whenever we have to go to India, we get your songs and we bring the recording, but the recording of Jeet Singh Negi is not available. I replied to them that they are in such a state that the recording cannot be done.”

Narendra Singh Negi said in his own words, “Later, when I was posted in Dehradun, in 1991-92, I had made a proposal to Jeet Singh Negi that people search for your songs, but your songs are not in the market. I asked him for permission that I want to sing your songs in my own voice, on which he was very happy. The company had given a check of Rs 25,000 to Jeet Singh Negi for writing those songs. When this When the check was handed over to him, he had tears in his eyes. He was very happy about the recording.”

Jeet Singh Negi is the first folk singer of Uttarakhand, whose songs were recorded in his own voice by HMV Company in 1947. Gramophone records of his songs were released by the Young India Gramophone Company in 1949.
