West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday (February 3, 2026) alleged that people affected by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists are not being given an opportunity to defend themselves. He raised questions about this process in the states just before the assembly elections. TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee said that impeachment action can be taken against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Will Congress and TMC contest elections together in Bengal?
Mamta Banerjee was asked whether there is any possibility of an alliance between Trinamool Congress and Congress in West Bengal? In response to this, Mamata Banerjee said that it has been the history of Bengal that everyone has always been fighting elections against us and we have been fighting alone.
Mamta’s statement on bringing impeachment against CEC
Bengal CM said, ‘We know that we do not have the numerical strength, but still if any proposal comes against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, we will support it. At least it will be recorded that a motion for impeachment was brought against a Chief Election Commissioner. We wrote 6 letters to the Election Commission, but received no response. Our leaders met the CEC, but that too remained inconclusive. There was no SIR after 2002, why was the decision of SIR taken just before the elections?
Why was SIR announced without preparation: CM Mamata
He said, ‘Why was SIR announced without preparation? SIR is taking place only in electoral states where there is no NDA government. Why is it not happening in Assam? People are not even being given a chance to get their names added. Names of 58 lakh people were removed without any investigation, but many of them are alive and were removed by declaring them dead. 8100 micro observers have been made, who are listening to the people of BJP. If 10,000 votes were cut in the seat won by BJP, then up to 70,000 votes were cut in our won seat.
TMC Chief Mamata said, ‘If you have courage then do not use the Election Commission, as you did in Haryana, Maharashtra and Bihar. The one who speaks Bengali is called Bangladeshi. We celebrate all the festivals like Gangasagar, Chhath Puja, Durga Puja. We go to Christian festivals. Everyone in the state has the right to celebrate their own festivals.
