Are Energy Drinks Harmful For Kidneys: In today’s time, people want everything to have immediate effect. The result of this thinking are the energy drinks available in the market, which are sold in the name of instant energy. These drinks usually contain a lot of sugar and caffeine, due to which the body feels energetic as soon as it is consumed. But this agility is not real energy, but a kind of pressure on the body.

What came out in the research?

The caffeine, sugar and preservatives present in energy drinks together increase inflammation in the kidneys and harm their ability to filter toxic elements from the blood. South Dakota State University reviewed studies conducted around the world between 2008 and 2020. On the basis of more than 15 scientific researches, it has come to light that energy drinks put extra burden on the kidneys and in the long run can harm the kidneys, liver and heart. Experts say that in many cases these drinks prove to be more dangerous than alcohol and soda.

What do experts say?

According to Dr. Vimal Kumar Rai of a private super specialty hospital based in Patna, while alcohol dehydrates the body and soda increases the sugar load, energy drinks are a combination of both. This simultaneously increases dehydration and blood sugar. The kidneys have to work harder, due to which the filter units start getting tired, swelling increases and the risk of damage increases.

Energy drinks contain chemicals like high-fructose corn syrup, caffeine, taurine, artificial sweetener and sodium benzoate. These elements increase oxidative stress in kidney cells. Repeatedly filtering these chemicals causes micro-injury, which can gradually turn into chronic kidney disease.

Uric acid increases rapidly

High-fructose sugar rapidly increases uric acid in the body, which directly attacks the kidney filter. This increases the risk of kidney swelling, high blood pressure and stones. Whereas synthetic sugar misleads the metabolism, does not provide real energy and increases obesity, fatty liver and insulin resistance. Ultimately the kidney has to bear its entire burden. Consuming energy drinks daily can trigger chronic inflammation in the body. Symptoms are not visible in the beginning, but the kidney keeps getting damaged internally. Caffeine increases blood pressure, thickens the blood and in the long run reduces the filtering ability of the kidneys.

What is the problem?

Experts say that the energy felt by drinking energy drinks is actually the result of suppressing fatigue signals in the brain. The body remains tired, but the brain does not feel it. This causes hormonal imbalance, high BP and weakening of immunity.

If someone takes energy drinks daily, he should stop them immediately. Drink 2.5–3 liters of water a day, reduce salt and processed food, get blood pressure and kidney tests done, limit caffeine and take a light walk daily. Lemon water, coconut water, buttermilk, fruits, sprouts and dry fruits are better options for natural energy.
