One of the biggest challenges facing society today is the generation gap. Due to changing lifestyle, fast technology and busy routine, the distance between children and elders is increasing. To reduce this distance, new initiatives have now started in schools. The Central Government and the Education Department have together taken important steps towards strengthening the relationships between children and their grandparents.

Following the guidelines of the Union Education Ministry, Delhi Education Department has started celebrating ‘Grandparents Day’ in all CBSE schools. On this day children come to school with their grandparents. Special activities take place throughout the day in the school premises, in which children and elders participate together. Its purpose is not just to organize a one day event, but to reduce the distance between hearts.

Initiative in India on the lines of America and Canada

This concept is not new. In countries like America and Canada, ‘Grandparents Day’ or ‘Grandfriends Day’ is being celebrated for a long time. Good results have emerged there. Children’s connection with their families has increased and the feeling of loneliness among the elderly has decreased. Now the same thinking is being adopted in India also, so that the roots of the family become strong and the values are passed on from generation to generation.

Related activities will run throughout the year

CBSE believes that organizing just one day is not enough. Therefore, the Board has indicated that activities related to this thinking will be conducted throughout the year. Schools have been asked to organize such programs along with studies, which increase dialogue and understanding between different generations.

What will be special on Grandparents Day?

Shared stories of children and grandparents
old games organized
Cultural programme
experience sharing sessions
activities like painting and writing
The purpose of all this is that children should understand their elders and learn from them.

Advice to call elders on special days

CBSE has prepared these guidelines under the recommendations of the National Council for Senior Citizens and the instructions of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Schools have been asked to invite grandparents even on occasions like Independence Day, Children’s Day and International Senior Citizens Day. This will maintain regular contact between children and elders.

Respect and understanding will increase in children

The board says that when children spend time with their grandparents, respect, patience and moral values automatically develop in them. The experiences of elders can show children the right direction of life. This also improves the emotional understanding of children.

Also advice on programs like ‘Walkathon’

CBSE has also suggested schools to organize programs like ‘Walkathon’. In this, grandparents and grandchildren or maternal grandparents and granddaughters should go together. Such programs are not only good for health, but also provide an opportunity for mutual conversation and laughter.

Loneliness of the elderly will reduce

Today many elderly people are struggling with the problem of loneliness and social distance. Spending time with children makes them happy. This initiative of schools will also help in connecting senior citizens with the society. They will feel that their presence is still important.
