An Indian teacher who teaches children in slums has been declared the winner of the James Education Global Teacher Prize worth US$ 1 million. Internationally renowned Indian artist and transformative teacher Rubal Nagi was selected this year from more than 5,000 nominations and applications received from 139 countries.

This announcement was made on the last day of the World Government Summit. The award has been presented by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, in collaboration with Sunny Vargi, Founder of GEMS Education, and The Vargi Foundation.

Rubal Nagi became emotional
After accepting the award, she (Ruble Nagi) wiped her tears and looked emotional. Smiling through tears, he said, “This is a dream come true. This award is the result of hard work of the last 24 years. Waking up in the morning and going to the remotest areas of India, including the slums, to teach children and learn from them, I had only one goal. Children’s education should not stop midway. It has been my dream to see every child of India in school.”
What is ‘Misal India’
Ruble himself created a scheme called ‘Misal India’, under which low-cost, arts-based education was provided to more than 10 lakh children in more than 100 slums and villages. Along with studies, she also gives various information to the children regarding numerical knowledge, life skills and vocational training. He also made a plan named ‘Misal Mumbai’. India’s first slum improvement initiative involved painting more than 155,000 houses, improving sanitation and drinking water, and organizing sanitation workshops.

What is Global Teacher Prize?
The Global Teacher Prize is the largest award of its kind and was established to honor an outstanding teacher every year. This is an initiative started in collaboration with Varkey Foundation and UNESCO. Since its inception, this award has received more than 100,000 applications and nominations from all over the world.

Ruble said that this award is a great initiative. He said, “Teachers have always been important and today they are more important than ever, so that they can inspire, motivate and take every child to school so that they can be given better education.”
