National Party Rule: In India’s multi-party democracy, the national party tag is not symbolic. Rather, it brings legal recognition, political credibility and many practical benefits. Recognition as state party in many states
A direct path to becoming a national party is to expand a strong regional presence. If any political party gets recognition as a state party in at least four different states then it automatically becomes eligible to get the status of national party.
Demonstration in Lok Sabha elections
Another important criterion is performance in the general elections. Any party can be recognized as a national party if it wins at least two percent of the total seats in the Lok Sabha. However, this MP should be from at least three different states. This proves that the party’s appeal is not limited to any one geographical area.
Vote share in states and parliamentary seats
The third path focuses on vote share coupled with parliamentary success. If a party secures at least 6% of the total valid votes in Lok Sabha or Assembly elections in 4 or more states and also wins at least four Lok Sabha seats, it becomes eligible for recognition as a national party.

One of the biggest advantages of being a national party is a permanent and special election symbol which is valid throughout the country. This mark cannot be given to any other party. This helps voters to easily identify the party on ballot papers and electronic voting machines.

National party status makes electoral processes much easier. When filing nomination, candidates need only one proposer instead of multiple signatures. Apart from this, national parties are allowed to appoint 40 star campaigners. Their travel and campaign expenses are not counted against the expenditure limits of individual candidates. Attaining the status of national party is a big achievement for any political organization. It shows public support, organizational strength and electoral performance in the states.
