On the purchase of crude oil by India, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said on Monday (9 February 2026) that we will decide the source for energy purchase keeping in mind the national interests. Regarding the India-US trade deal, Donald Trump claimed that India has agreed not to buy oil from Russia and to buy crude oil from America-Venezuela. On this, the Foreign Secretary said that it has been India’s strategy to maintain multiple sources for energy purchase.

‘There should be secure supply of energy to all countries’

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, ‘India plays an important role in keeping prices stable in the global energy market. India and many other surrounding countries have a common interest that energy prices remain stable. There should be safe and reliable supply of energy to all countries. He said that oil companies actually decide where to purchase oil and these decisions are mainly based on market conditions.

India will take a stand on purchasing Russian oil

Responding to a question about India’s plans to buy oil from Russia, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, ‘We are a developing economy. We have to be conscious of the availability of our resources. When we are 80-85 percent dependent on imports, we have to be sensitive to expensive prices. It is no surprise that our top priority in energy matters is to protect the interests of Indian consumers.

We buy energy from many countries: Foreign Secretary

The Foreign Secretary said, ‘In recent years the global economy has faced a lot of uncertainty, which has had a deep impact on the stability of global energy markets. India is not only a big consumer country, but has also played an important role in bringing stability to the global energy market. We buy energy from many countries. The more diversity there is in this area, the safer we will be.
