The name of ‘Briber Pundit’ will be changed
Let us tell you that Netflix informed the Delhi High Court that it is going to change the name of its upcoming film Ghooshkhor Pandit. The lawyer appearing for the company told the court that all the promotional materials related to the film have already been removed from social media. After this argument, Delhi High Court disposed of the petition demanding a ban on the release and streaming of the film Ghooshkhor Pandit.
The petitioner had alleged that the title and proposed content of the film were defamatory and hurt communal sentiments.
About the ‘Bribery Pundit’ controversy
The root of all the controversy regarding Manoj Bajpayee’s upcoming film is its title ‘Ghooskhor Pandit’, which roughly means ‘Corrupt Pandit’. Critics say the use of the word ‘Pandat’, which is usually associated with Brahmin surnames, reinforces negative stereotypes and may even be harmful.
Manoj Bajpayee and Neeraj Pandey had given clarification
Manoj Bajpayee had expressed his views on social media on Friday amidst the uproar over ‘Ghooskhor Pandit’. He wrote, “When something you are a part of hurts, it forces you to stop and listen.” He clarified that his decision to do this project was based on the character’s arc and was not meant to comment on any community. He also said that the makers had removed the promotional material keeping in mind the sentiments of the people.
Director Neeraj Pandey, who is attached to the project along with Ritesh Shah, also later issued a clarification on Instagram, emphasizing that the series is completely fictional. He said, “Our film is a fictional cop drama, and the word ‘Pandat’ is used only as a colloquial name for a fictional character. The story focuses on the actions and choices of an individual and does not comment on or represent any caste, religion or community.” The production team also said that the promotional content was withdrawn on its own volition, before the government’s instructions.
