From January 2026, the government has completely changed the way of measuring CPI i.e. inflation. The base year has shifted from 2012 to 2024 and the list of items has increased from 299 to 358. Now online food orders, Ola-Uber rides, Netflix subscription and digital services will also be part of CPI. By reducing the weightage of food, more importance has been given to housing and services. This will make the calculation of interest rates, home loan EMI and Dearness Allowance more realistic. Headline inflation may appear slightly higher, but it will better reflect the real cost of living.
