There is an uproar over the bowling action of Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq in the T20 World Cup. Some are calling it illegal and some are in support of it. Even former Indian cricketers are in two camps regarding this, while Aakash Chopra raised questions on it, Ashwin supported it. So in the meantime it is important for you to know what the ICC rules say? And know how ICC checks the bowler’s action.
Talking about the bowling action of Usman Tariq, he pauses for a while before releasing the ball and then bowls. This is troubling the batsmen. Along with this, questions are also being raised on his action. Many people believe that Tariq does chucking. Former Indian player Ashwin wrote in a post regarding this that he stops before bowling the ball which is legal. However, regarding the action, he said that it is the job of ICC to investigate it. Now the question is how does ICC investigate?
What are the ICC rules for bowling action?
According to ICC rules, when a bowler throws or throws the ball, it is illegal. If a bowler straightens his arm while bowling and extends his elbow by more than 15 degrees while releasing the ball, or rather gives a jerk, then it is considered illegal.
In international cricket, the match official has to decide in real time whether the bowler’s action is legal or illegal. If the official feels that the player is bowling with an illegal action then they have to file a report.
Then the bowler’s action is tested at the ICC Testing Centre. If that bowler’s action is found illegal then he is banned from bowling. After this he cannot bowl until he corrects his action.
