US President Donald Trump increased the fee for H-1B visa to $1 lakh in September last year. This decision made it very expensive for American companies to hire foreign workers. Where earlier companies could easily hire foreign employees, now they have to spend huge amounts on each application. The impact of this change is clearly visible on the entire tech and health sector.
The new fees have hit small startups the most. These companies already work with a limited budget. In such a situation, it is not easy for them to pay the fee of 1 lakh dollars. Especially small companies working in areas like Artificial Intelligence and Healthcare are in more trouble. Foreign workers with special skills are needed in these areas. But now due to high fees they are avoiding recruitment through H-1B visa.
Big tech companies found a way
According to reports, on the other hand, big tech companies like Amazon, Microsoft and Google have the capacity to pay this fee, but they too are now adopting new methods. According to the report, instead of relying directly on H-1B visas, these companies are adopting another route. Due to this, they are saving money by paying fees and the work also continues.
New changes in H-1B visa
Every year 85 thousand new H-1B visas are issued in America. Out of these, 20 thousand visas are reserved for those foreign students who have obtained Masters degree or above from American universities. Earlier, lottery system was adopted for this visa, that is, who would get the visa depended on luck.
Now the government has made changes in this system also. Under the new system, priority will be given to those people whose salary is higher. Big companies will directly benefit from this, because they generally pay higher salaries. This may make it easier than before for candidates with higher salaries to get a visa.
New opportunity for foreign students
Amidst these changes, there is good news for foreign students studying in America. After completing their studies there, students are allowed to work for 12 months under ‘Optional Practical Training’ i.e. OPT. If the student has done Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths i.e. STEM course, then he gets a chance to work for three years.
Now big tech companies are hiring such students directly instead of H-1B visa. Due to this, the company does not have to pay visa fees and the student gets work experience in America. While working for three years, the company can also make future plans.
Priority for those with higher salaries
Experts say that even if a big company sponsors an H-1B visa for an employee, the chances of getting the visa are higher. Under the new policy, priority is being given to those getting higher salaries. Bigger companies generally offer better salaries, so their candidates can have an edge.
Job option abroad also
Big tech companies have another option. If it is difficult to call an employee to America, then they can also give him work in the offices in other countries. In this way the work of the company continues and the hurdle of visa is also reduced.
