Does Not Brushing At Night Affect Heart Health: Oral hygiene may seem like a small daily habit, but ignoring it is not just limited to cavities, its effects can be much more serious. Content creator and doctor of Anesthesiology and Interventional Pain Medicine, Kunal Sood recently told on Instagram that not brushing at night can also have a negative impact on heart health.
Responding to a content creator’s claim that “if you don’t brush your teeth before sleeping, you may be at higher risk of heart disease”, Dr Sood agreed. He stressed that oral hygiene is not only important, but it also plays a protective role in heart health. He warned that “if you skip brushing your teeth at night, you’re not only risking cavities.” Citing a 2023 study, he said that poor oral hygiene has been found to be associated with increased risk of heart disease and heart failure. Therefore, it is very important to brush at the right time.
Our heart gets affected over time
According to Dr. Sood, “The theory is that the bacteria present in the mouth reach the body through the blood, causing inflammation and over time it affects the heart.” He also clarified that not brushing does not directly cause heart disease, but poor oral hygiene is one of the many risk factors that can contribute to heart problems.
What is the benefit to those who brush too much?
They say that people who brush more often usually have a healthier heart. He further said, “In fact, brushing at least three times a day and getting regular dental cleanings have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. It also reduces the chances of problems like gum disease and tooth loss. Oral hygiene is one of the easiest ways to support heart health.”
What effect does it have on the heart?
Experts say that when we stop brushing at night, plaque and bacteria start accumulating in the mouth. These bacteria release toxins that can enter the bloodstream and trigger inflammatory reactions throughout the body. This swelling that persists for a long time can damage the inner layer of blood vessels. Due to this, plaque starts accumulating in the arteries and the risk of heart related problems increases. Although not every person with poor oral hygiene will develop heart disease, maintaining oral hygiene is an important way to reduce inflammation and maintain good heart health.
