February 13 is the birth anniversary of Urdu poetry poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz. Faiz Saheb is said to be a poet who wrapped ’embers’ in the words of poetry, who raised his voice against social injustice, slavery and conservatism through his works. He was the main pillar of the progress-loving movement and his poetry still inspires revolution.
Faiz’s life has been an example of an all-round personality. He was a soldier, a teacher, a journalist and also an ambassador. Faiz Ahmed Faiz was born on 13 February 1911 in an educated family of Kala Qadir village in Sialkot district of India. His father Chaudhary Sultan Muhammad Khan was an advisor to the Shah of Afghanistan, which provided good economic conditions and cultural environment to the family.
Faiz’s early education took place at home with religious and classical knowledge. He received education from Iqbal’s guru Shamsul Ulema Syed Mir Hasan and also saw Iqbal. Faiz did MA in Arabic and English from Government College, Lahore. His education was mainly in English medium, but his home education was deeply influenced by Arabic, Persian and Urdu.
Faiz’s first desire was to become a teacher. In the year 1935, he started teaching in a college in Amritsar. The principal there was Dr. Muhammad Deen Taseer, who had studied from London and was of progressive ideology. Faiz’s wife Alice and Taseer’s wife were sisters, which strengthened their personal relationships. In Amritsar, Faiz found the atmosphere of Progressive Writers Association. Here Sahibzada Mahmud Uzzafar and his wife met Dr. Rashid Jahan, who gave Faiz the initial lessons of socialism and progressive ideas. Rashid Jahan was a revolutionary woman, doctor and early feminist, who worked on women’s rights and the treatment of the poor.
Faiz came from an environment where progressive ideas gave him a new direction. Faiz also served in the British Indian Army, participating in World War II. After partition, he became the editor of a newspaper in Pakistan. There is a unique combination of love, revolution and justice in his poetry. Faiz was also jailed in the Rawalpindi conspiracy case, but he never bowed down. His books like ‘Dast-e-Saba’ and ‘Zindaan Nama’ are testimony to jail life.
Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poems have been translated into Urdu, English and Russian as well as French, German, Spanish and many other languages. His revolutionary and emotional poetry has influenced readers globally.
