Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) registered a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections held in Bangladesh on Friday. With this, there is hope for stability in the country after the unstable period that has been going on for the last 18 months. In the results of the voting held on Thursday, BNP was seen moving towards an overwhelming majority, which seems to clear the way for Tariq Rehman, who has been living outside the country for a long time, to become the next Prime Minister.
This was the first time in the last three decades that Awami League’s election symbol ‘Naav’ was not on the ballot paper. This time, BNP was in direct competition with the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami and the youth-based National Citizen Party (NCP).
Tariq Rehman was in exile for almost 17 years and now he is promising to strengthen the rule of law in the country and give momentum to the garments sector again. He has called it a ‘new path’ for the country. At the same time, Jamaat-e-Islami used its full strength, but according to earlier assessments, it did not appear to be in a position to form the government.

1. BNP won 209 seats. Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats, NCP 6, Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis 2, Islami Andolan Bangladesh 1, Gana Adhikar 1, BJP 1, Gana Sanghit 1, Khilafat Majlis 1 and independents won 7 seats.
2. There are a total of 350 parliamentary seats in Bangladesh. Of these, 50 seats are reserved for women, who do not have direct votes. Voting is held on 300 seats, but due to the death of one candidate, this time voting was held on only 299 seats. Voting will be held on Sherpur-3 seat later. The 50 seats for women are decided on the basis of the performance of the parties in general seats.
3. This was the first election after independence, in which both the former Prime Ministers were not in the fray, neither Sheikh Hasina nor Khaleda Zia. Khaleda Zia died late last year, while Sheikh Hasina came to India after August 2024.
4. Awami League was barred from contesting the elections this time, while the party is still considered to have around 35-40 percent votes. The total voting was around 48 percent, which clearly shows that the boycott appeal had an impact. This also shows that the roots of Sheikh Hasina’s party are still strong.
5. BNP’s main contest was with the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami. Earlier, Jamaat used to contest elections with BNP. This time the NCP formed by the students was also with the Jamaat, but it could not show any significant impact. There was also mutual tussle among the student leaders.
6. BNP’s Gayeshwar Chandra Roy may become the first Hindu MP from Dhaka since 1971. He is expected to win from Dhaka-3 seat by a good margin.
7. This time two votes were cast – one to elect MP and the other for Mohammad Yunus’s ‘July Charter Referendum’. The purpose of the July Charter is to improve the parliamentary system. This includes things like a two-house Parliament, the rule that a person cannot become Prime Minister more than twice and a caretaker government 90 days before the elections. All big parties have supported it.
8. According to local broadcaster Jamuna TV, BNP and its allies have won 211 seats and secured a two-thirds majority in Parliament. Jamaat-e-Islami alliance has got 70 seats, while other parties have got six seats. The results of 287 seats out of 299 have been declared. The BNP alliance also includes Gono Odhikar Porishad and Gono Songhoti Movement.
9. BNP Chairman Tariq Rehman has appealed to party leaders and workers to offer special prayers for the entire country after Friday prayers. He has also asked not to hold victory rallies or public celebrations. This information was given by his press secretary Saleh Shibli.
10. Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rehman said on Thursday that if the current trend continues, the party will accept the results.
