Are Sugar Free Drinks Really Healthy: The sharp rise in sales of zero and low-sugar drinks in 2025 is being considered not just a market trend but also a sign of changing health priorities. According to experts, people have now become more aware about the dangers of obesity, diabetes and heart disease caused by excess sugar. The share of zero-sugar drinks reaching 30 percent of Coca-Cola’s total sales reflects this change. The increasing demand for Diet Coke, Coke Zero and other no-sugar variants shows that consumers want to reduce calories without compromising on taste. Health experts say that reducing the amount of sugar can help in weight control and blood sugar management.

Demand for sugar free drinks

PepsiCo’s sales of sugar-free and low-sugar drinks have also increased to 59 percent. The companies claim this is a result of increasing demand for “healthy beverage options”. However, experts also clarify that even though these beverages contain less sugar, balanced consumption of artificial sweeteners and processed ingredients is necessary. According to industry data, the share of zero and low-sugar drinks was around 5 percent in 2020, which increased to 30 percent in 2025. This surge shows that people are now paying more attention to calorie count, label reading and nutritional value. Brands like Tata Starbucks are also introducing sugar-free flavours, especially at the beginning of the year when people take fitness resolutions. There is more awareness about fitness and body image in the Gen Z generation, the effect of which is also visible on their drink choice.

Investor Srinivas Murthy, former marketing head of Coca-Cola India and GSK Consumer Healthcare, believes that wellness is no longer just an option but a game changer for the Indian urban middle class. People are now turning towards health both out of compulsion and by their own choice. “Along with this, India’s large youth population, especially Gen-G, is choosing a healthy lifestyle not only to stay fit but also to look better, the direct impact of which is now visible in the drinks sales figures.”

What do health experts say?

According to the report of Penn Dental Family Practice, which provides information on health-related topics, even though sugar-free drinks are low in calories, they are not completely safe. The acid present in them damages the tooth enamel and artificial sweeteners can create the risk of weight gain and heart diseases. For better health, limit their intake and give priority to water for hydration.
