Many times people assume that only overspeeding, jumping red light or drunk driving are major crimes, but the reality is that not wearing seat belt, talking on mobile, crossing the stop line or not carrying documents can also be heavy on the pocket. In fact, after the implementation of the amended Motor Vehicles Act from September 1, 2019, there has been a huge increase in the amount of fine. Delhi is among those states where challan rates have not been reduced. Challan without license, insurance or registration
- There is a fine of Rs 5000 for driving a vehicle in Delhi without a driving license.
- Driving a vehicle without valid insurance can result in a fine of Rs 2000 for the first time and up to Rs 4000 if caught again.
- For driving an unregistered vehicle, a fine of Rs 5,000 can be imposed and for repeat offence, a fine can go up to Rs 10,000.
- Driving without a permit can result in a fine of Rs 10,000 and up to 6 months in jail.
Challan on drunken or dangerous driving
- In Delhi, drunk driving attracts a fine of up to Rs 10,000 and a court challan.
- Dangerous driving or jumping red light can result in a fine of Rs 1000 to Rs 5000 and imprisonment of 6 months to 1 year.
- The fine for overspeeding is Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 for a light motor vehicle and Rs 2000 to Rs 4000 for a heavy motor vehicle.
- There can be a fine of Rs 5,000 for carelessness while racing or speeding, and up to Rs 10,000 or jail for repeated offences.
Challan rules regarding seat belt, helmet and mobile
- A fine of up to Rs 1000 can be imposed for not wearing a seat belt. Seat belt is mandatory not only for the front passenger but also for the rear seat passenger.
- At the same time, driving a two-wheeler without a helmet can result in challan of up to Rs 1000 and license suspension.
- Apart from this, a challan of up to Rs 5000 can be deducted for using mobile while driving.
- There is a provision of fine and punishment up to Rs 10,000 for not giving way to emergency vehicles like fire brigade.
Rules related to pollution and documents
- A fine of up to Rs 2000 can be imposed for driving a vehicle without a valid pollution certificate.
- For emitting excessive smoke, action of up to Rs 10,000 can be taken.
- A fine of up to Rs 10,000 can be imposed for not having HSRP number plate or color coded sticker.
Challan rules on two wheeler and underage driving
- There is a fine of up to Rs 200 and license suspension for carrying more than two people.
- Apart from this, for driving a vehicle by a minor, a fine of Rs 25,000, registration of the vehicle can be canceled and the owner of the vehicle can be punished for up to 3 years.
- There can be a fine of Rs 5000 for crossing stop line or zebra line.
- Failure to follow the instructions of the policeman on duty can result in a challan of up to Rs 2000.
- In cases like wrong parking, wrong use of high beam or discrepancy in the number plate, a challan of up to Rs 500 can be imposed.
