We often think that aging is a simple and slow process. Every year there are slight changes, graying of hair, wrinkles on the skin, lack of energy, but what if the truth is different and what if the body suddenly starts changing rapidly at a certain age. An important research published in 2024 challenged this notion. This study was done at America’s famous research institute Stanford University. This research was led by geneticist Michael Snyder. According to him, the process of human aging does not proceed in a completely straight line, but there are sudden rapid changes in two specific phases. So let us know in which two main phases the age increases fastest.
In which 2 main phases does aging occur fastest?
According to research, major and rapid age-related changes in the human body appear mainly in two phases. In which the first phase occurs around the age of 44 years and the second phase occurs around the age of 60 years. Around these two ages, many biological (molecular) changes in the body suddenly increase.
How was this research done?
Scientists studied 108 adults aged 25 to 70 for several years. Every few months, biological samples related to blood, skin, intestine, nose and mouth were taken from them. In total, more than 1,35,000 biological features (such as RNA, proteins, lipids and microbiomes) were analyzed. In which more than 246 billion data points were examined. After analyzing such huge data, scientists found that changes in about 81 percent of the molecules were most visible in these two age stages.
What changes around age 44?
In the mid-40s, rapid changes were seen in many areas of the body. Such as metabolism of lipids, ability to digest caffeine and alcohol, increased risk of heart disease, looseness of skin and decreased strength of muscles. The interesting thing is that menopause usually starts in women at this age. But researchers found that major changes also occur in men at the same age. This means that hormonal changes are not the only reason. There may be other biological reasons behind this.
What happens around age 60?
In the beginning of 60, another major change occurs in the body. At this time, carbohydrate metabolism is affected, there is a change in caffeine processing, the risk of heart disease increases, the immune system becomes weak, kidney function declines, and there is further weakness in the skin and muscles. That is, at this age the repair and protection capacity of the body starts decreasing markedly. To some extent, researchers found that the risk of diseases like Alzheimer’s and heart disease does not increase gradually, but rapidly after a certain age. From this it is understood that sudden changes at the biological level inside the body can also suddenly increase the risk of disease.
