As soon as the name of late Hindi cinema actress Madhubala comes up, a smiling and beautiful face appears before our eyes. But, behind this face there was deep pain hidden. Madhubala was suffering from serious heart disease in real life. This disease not only affected his health but also affected his career, personal life and future hopes.
birth of madhubala
Madhubala, born on February 14, 1933 in Delhi, had a heart disease since childhood, which is called ventricular septal defect in medical language. At that time, there was neither proper treatment for this disease nor were its medical facilities available in India. The doctors’ advice was that he should not take too much hard work and stress. Doctors had even told him that shooting could prove dangerous for him. But, due to compulsions and passion for work, she did not stop and kept working by hiding her illness.
Early career
In the initial years of his film career, the disease was not that severe, but as work pressure increased, his condition worsened. Long shooting, heavy costumes and constant traveling had a deep impact on his heart. There were many times when she had trouble breathing, felt dizzy, or even vomited blood during shooting, but she remained on the set.
the most difficult period
The most difficult phase of Madhubala’s illness came when she was shooting for the film ‘Mughal-e-Azam’. This film became the biggest recognition of his career, but this film took away the strength from his body. During the shooting of the famous scene of Sheesh Mahal, she stood for hours on the cold floor, even though doctors advised her to take rest. After the shooting, his condition often deteriorated so much that he was taken straight to the room.
Went to London for treatment
As the illness progressed, Madhubala was taken to London for treatment, where doctors told her that she did not have much time. At that time she was at the peak of her career. Doctors had also forbidden her from marriage and pregnancy, because it could put her life in danger. But, Madhubala decided to live life in her own way. After marriage, illness confined him almost to his home. Oxygen cylinders, nurses and doctors became a part of their everyday life. Film offers kept coming, but she could not accept them even if she wanted to.
The most painful aspect of the disease was loneliness. The same industry that had made him a star gradually moved away from him. He died on 23 February 1969 at the age of just 36.
