After the bumper victory in Bangladesh elections, BNP President Tariq Rahman is all set to take oath as the Prime Minister. He is to be sworn in on Tuesday (17 February 2025) in Dhaka, which will be attended by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri from the Indian side. A day earlier, BNP leader ANM Ehsanul Haq Milan had demanded to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the swearing-in ceremony of Tariq Rehman.

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement saying, ‘Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent the Government of India at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected Bangladesh government under the leadership of Tariq Rahman in Dhaka on February 17, 2026. The participation of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha on this occasion underlines the deep and unbreakable friendship between the people of India and Bangladesh. As neighbors bound by shared history, culture and mutual respect, India welcomes the formation of the elected government of Bangladesh under the leadership of Tariq Rahman.
When will Tariq Rehman be sworn in?
Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin will swear in the new cabinet of BNP Chairman Tariq Rahman at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Complex on February 17. The officers provided this information. The interesting aspect of this ceremony is that it is being organized in the South Plaza of the National Parliament Complex whereas till now the swearing-in ceremonies have been held in Rashtrapati Bhavan. On February 17, PM Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai.
Bangladesh has expressed its desire to reestablish relations with India after the removal of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her party Awami League from power. Humayun Kabir, advisor to BNP President Tariq Rehman, said that both the countries should work together for mutual benefit.
Bangladesh’s stance on relations with India
He stressed that it is now India’s responsibility to accept the changed political reality after the huge mandate given to BNP in Bangladesh. Humayun Kabir said, ‘Sheikh Hasina and Awami League do not exist in today’s Bangladesh. The public has clearly given its verdict in favor of BNP. He termed Hasina, who had gone to India after the August 2024 uprising, as a terrorist and accused her of being responsible for the deaths of more than 1,500 people.
What did Tariq Rehman’s advisor say about Sheikh Hasina?
He urged the Indian government not to allow Sheikh Hasina or other Awami League leaders to use its land to influence the stability of Bangladesh. Tariq Rahman’s advisor said, ‘India should not be seen as a participant in any activity that weakens the sovereignty of Bangladesh. Once this issue is resolved, normal diplomatic cooperation can resume. We are neighbors and we should work together for mutual benefit.
