Stories of love, dedication and sacrifice are often heard in books and films, but a true story that emerged from East Champaran, Bihar has made people emotional. On the occasion of Valentine’s Day, when the whole world was expressing love, retired Panchayat Secretary Balkishun Ram, belonging to an ordinary family, showed such love towards his wife, which forced everyone to think. He spent Rs 65 lakh to build a 65 feet high ‘temple’ in the memory of his late wife Sharda Devi and installed her statue in it.
Balkishun Ram goes to the temple every morning and offers flowers.
In this temple built in Bhuvan Chhapra village of Chakia block of East Champaran district, Balkishun Ram offers flowers and vermilion in front of his wife’s idol every morning and evening. He says that he never saw God, but for him his wife was God. A lamp is lit every day in the temple. Sharda Devi loved tea, hence a cup of tea is kept in front of her statue every day. Lunch and dinner are also offered with reverence.
Wife died in 2022
Balkishun Ram tells that Sharda Devi was suffering from heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure since 2007. Treatment continued, but six months before his retirement in 2022, he suffered a heart attack and died. Balkishun was completely devastated by his wife’s death. He invested his entire retirement fund, around Rs 65 lakh, in immortalizing his wife’s memory. He says that even if he had Rs 65 crore, he would have spent it.

Husband’s heart fills with memories of his wife, users are praising him
His voice becomes hoarse while remembering the struggle of his life. He had to leave studies after his father’s death in his childhood. At that time Sharda Devi sold her jewelery and inspired him to continue his studies. She used to work as a laborer, take care of the house and always encourage him. Balkishun says that he was able to become Panchayat Secretary only because of his wife’s sacrifice and hard work. Now even on social media, people are praising her and saying that this is the true love which remains alive even after death.
