Zimbabwe Super 8 T20 World Cup: Zimbabwe cricket team has created history. With the cancellation of the match with Ireland on Tuesday, 17 February, Zimbabwe’s team has qualified for the Super-8. With this, Australia has been eliminated in the group stage for the second time in the history of T20 World Cup. Today the match between Zimbabwe and Ireland was to be held in Pallekele, Sri Lanka, but due to heavy rain even the toss could not be held.
Zimbabwe created history
This is the first time that Zimbabwe has made it to the Super-8 stage of the T20 World Cup. The format of the World Cup was changed in 2024, after which the Zimbabwe team has passed the group stage examination for the first time. However, this is the second time in the T20 World that Zimbabwe has gone beyond the group stage. It had entered the last-12 in 2022, but after changing the format, Zimbabwe’s team has come to the Super-8 for the first time.
Australia is out
Australia could register only one win in 3 matches so far. Whereas Zimbabwe had won both its matches. Australia would be hoping that by any means, Ireland would win over Zimbabwe, because only then could Australia’s Super-8 hopes remain alive. But if today’s match is drawn, Zimbabwe’s total points have become 5, and Australia could get maximum 4 points only.
The result of this is that Australia has been eliminated in the group stage of T20 World Cup 2026 itself. Earlier, even in the 2009 World Cup, Australia could not progress beyond the group stage. So far, a total of 7 teams have made it to the Super-8 of the T20 World Cup. Their names are India, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, West Indies, England, South Africa and New Zealand.
