As soon as the names of India and Pakistan come to mind, a picture of borders, wars and diplomatic tensions emerges in the mind, but is such bitter enmity limited only to South Asia? There are countries in many corners of the world that do not tolerate each other. The root of enmity is border, power and ideology.
When there is a border dispute, war or ideological conflict between two countries for a long time, the relations become very bitter. There have been three major wars between India and Pakistan since the partition of 1947 and tension over Kashmir remains constant. Similarly, many other countries of the world have also been living under tension for decades.
New axis of conflict between China and America
Relations between China and the United States have been quite tense in the last few years. Trade war, technical restrictions, South China Sea and Taiwan issue put both of them face to face. When America imposed restrictions on Chinese tech companies, China also took retaliatory steps. This enmity did not turn into open war, but the strategic conflict is continuously increasing.
North and South Korea
North Korea and South Korea are technically still at war. Although the Korean War stopped in 1953, a peace agreement was never reached. There is heavy military deployment between the two countries and periodic missile tests make the situation more tense.
Russia and Ukraine
The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine since 2022 has shaken the entire world. After Russian military action in Ukraine, Western countries have imposed strict economic sanctions on Russia. This conflict has now become a major issue in global politics and relations between the two countries have become extremely bitter.
Iran and America
Relations between Iran and the United States have been poor since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. America has imposed sanctions several times regarding the nuclear program. There is no direct war between the two countries, but the process of rhetoric and sanctions continues continuously.
Israel and Iran
There is deep mistrust between Israel and Iran in the Middle East. Israel considers Iran’s nuclear program a threat to its security. The two countries are not at direct war, but strong statements and indirect actions against each other continue.
Sudan and South Sudan
Sudan and South Sudan separated in 2011, but disputes over borders and oil resources have not ended. There have been many clashes between the two countries and the situation cannot be called completely normal.
Is this enmity like India-Pakistan?
The circumstances of every country are different, but the similarity is that where border disputes, political conflicts and historical wounds run deep, relations do not improve for a long time. Like India and Pakistan, there is a wall of distrust between these countries too. There are at least half a dozen such big examples in the world, where countries have not liked each other for decades. The only difference is that at some places this tension has turned into open war, while at other places it is limited to diplomatic battles.
