On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj, the Maratha community took out a big procession in Bagalkot city late evening on Thursday (February 19). This huge procession started from the Ambabhavani temple of the fort and Shivaji Maharaj’s procession proceeded through the main road to Basaveshwar Circle.
After Basaveshwar Circle, the procession started moving towards the fort via Vallabhbhai Chowk. It is alleged that when the procession reached outside a mosque built there, the sound of the DJ was increased and people stopped there and started shouting slogans and started dancing and singing. After this the people present in the mosque protested.
Stones thrown at Shivaji Maharaj’s procession
Although some policemen present at the spot tried to pacify the Muslim youth present there by going inside the mosque, but in the meanwhile some mischievous element threw slippers towards the procession. Due to which the atmosphere immediately deteriorated and after some time some miscreants threw stones at the procession from inside the mosque.
Hindu activists set fire to carts
During this time, the police handled the situation using mild force and sent the procession forward, but shortly after this, Hindu activists allegedly set fire to the carts parked outside the mosque. Regarding this entire matter, leaders of Hindu organizations have demanded that appropriate action should be taken against the culprits who threw stones at the procession. This incident has created an atmosphere of tension in the entire area.
Considering the sensitivity of the matter, tight security arrangements have been made in the entire district. The number of police personnel has been further increased. Security has been tightened. The Superintendent of Police has identified the people responsible for this tension and has assured to take legal action against them.
