Are Ultra Processed Foods as Addictive as Tobacco: Cold drinks, chips and cookies have become a part of the everyday life of many people today. But are these things as simple as they seem? A new one happened in America Study Has made a shocking comparison. Researchers say that ultra-processed foods are more similar to industries like cigarettes and tobacco than fresh fruits and vegetables, whether it is about their effects or the way they are made. They claim that these products are designed in such a way that people eat them as much as possible.
This study has been done jointly by researchers from Harvard University, University of Michigan and Duke University. It was published in Milbank Quarterly, a journal focused on health policy. According to the report, companies making ultra-processed foods, such as soft drinks, frozen pizzas and packaged cereals, employ engineering strategies that once had their roots in the tobacco industry. The objective is clear to motivate consumers to eat more again and again.
What is mixed in these?
Precise amounts of sugar, salt, fat and additives are added to these food products so that the reward system of the brain can be activated. Researchers have described them as not just food, but deliberately prepared, highly engineered and taste-optimized products. Given the health risks, experts have suggested imposing strict regulations on tobacco, such as clear warning labels, higher taxes, banning sales in schools and hospitals, and controlling advertising targeted at children. However, a big difference is that food is a basic need of life, hence it cannot be avoided completely. This is the reason why regulation is being considered more important.
Warning has come before also
In a UNICEF report published in The Lancet before this study, it was also stated that in the 11 countries surveyed, 10 to 35 percent of children under 5 years of age drink sweetened soft drinks regularly. About 60 percent of the youth admitted that they had eaten at least one ultra-processed product the day before. In rich countries, these products now constitute more than half of the total daily calories, while their consumption is also increasing rapidly in low-income countries. However, there is an ongoing debate among scientists whether ultra-processed food can really be considered equivalent to tobacco. But their increasing share in the diet of children and adolescents has definitely raised the question that the role of the modern food industry and its regulation needs to be looked at afresh.
