Delhi: Sometimes CAA, sometimes fees…, in the last few years, when has JNU been surrounded by controversies?

Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), one of the prestigious universities of India, is known for academic excellence, but its relationship with controversies also often remains in the headlines. There have been many recent incidents in which this university has turned into a battlefield overnight.

The latest incident occurred on February 22 when the situation became tense late night on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus when violence broke out between left-wing and right-wing student groups during a protest march. Both groups have blamed each other for the violence. According to the students, several students were injured in alleged stone pelting after the clash. But this is not the first time that something like this has happened in JNU. Let us see what happened from the year 2020 till now.

There was an uproar over the protest against CAA in the year 2020!

In January 2020, on the night of January 5, masked attackers entered the campus and attacked students and teachers, in which about 40 people were injured. Let us tell you that this attack took place when a group of teachers was discussing increasing the campus fees. This was the reason why this incident was seen in connection with the campus fee hike and the ongoing protests against CAA in those days. At the same time, different student organizations kept blaming each other.

In January 2024, more than four students were injured in a clash over election committee selection and eight ABVP members were fined ₹19,000 each in connection with the 2024 violence, which the organization alleged was a nexus between the administration and the student union.

Controversy over biometric system in 2025!

In the year 2025 also, many controversies came to light, including conflict over Dussehra event, MoU with Siddhant Knowledge Foundation, protest against biometric system and rustication of 5 student leaders after vandalism in the library.

The Left Front won key posts in the student union elections in November 2025, while the administration filed a police complaint in January 2026 after programs and controversial slogans on the anniversary of the 2020 attacks. Most of the incidents in JNU have been related to the ideological conflict and administrative decisions of the Left and Right student organizations, where despite investigation and disciplinary action, the incidents of confrontation have not stopped.

Let us tell you that the names of student organizations ABVP, JNSU, AISA, SFI are involved in these controversies. Controversies start between these organizations in matters of allegations and counter-allegations and also fade away with time. But the question arises whether no law and order can be implemented in such big institutions.. Shouldn’t research, study and intellectual discussion be the priority of the students studying in an institution like JNU which has the tag of a university? The incidents that are continuously coming to light indicate that such disputes are not going to stop without setting a clear framework for communication, accountability and administrative strictness among student organizations.
