Loss or theft of a checkbook may seem like a normal thing to many people, but in reality it can prove to be a big financial threat. If the check book falls into the hands of a wrong person, he can withdraw money from your account by forging your signature. Delay in such cases can prove costly. Therefore, as soon as it is discovered that the checkbook is missing, instead of panicking, it is important to take immediate action. In such a situation, let us now tell you what to do if your checkbook is lost, otherwise your account will become empty within minutes.

First inform the bank

As soon as you become aware of the loss or theft of your check book, inform your bank without wasting any time. According to the rules of the bank, if the customer does not give timely information and any fraudulent transaction takes place during this period, then the responsibility can also fall on the customer. Therefore, the first step is to block the check book or put stop payment on the concerned check number.

Ways to block checkbook

  • If you have the facility of net banking or bank’s mobile app, then log in and select the option related to Check Services or Stop Payment. Now the check book or the related check number can be blocked immediately as soon as the necessary information is filled.
  • Apart from this, if there is no internet facility, call the toll-free customer care number of the bank. Request to block the check book by describing your problem. Bank officials may ask some questions for identity verification, if you answer them your check book will be blocked.
  • If there is a bank branch near you, then you can also go there and submit a written application. The bank usually fills up the stop payment request form, which needs to be submitted with correct information.

When to report to police?

If there is a suspicion that the check book has been stolen or other items are missing, it is better to lodge a police report. In case of any dispute in the police report, it can act as evidence for you. After the check book is blocked, take written confirmation from the bank through SMS or email. This can be useful in case of any dispute in future. After this apply for a new check book. When you get a new check book, note down its numbers safely. If information is not given in time and someone misuses the cheque, the bank may refuse to take responsibility. In such a situation, it may be difficult to get the money back.
