Once again a big decision regarding name change has come to light in the politics and administration of Rajasthan. The state government has announced to change the names of three cities, which also includes changing the name of the state’s only hill station, Mount Abu. Now Mount Abu will be known as Abu Raj. Mount Abu is located in Sirohi district and for years has been a center of attraction for tourists not only in Rajasthan but across the country.
According to the government’s decision, the name of Jahazpur will be changed to Yagyapur. Jahazpur is a historical town of Bhilwara district, whose identity is linked to ancient religious and cultural traditions. At the same time, it has been decided to change the name of Kaman to Kamvan. Kaman is located in Deeg district and is considered deeply connected to the culture of the Braj region.
The Chief Minister had announced in the House
The announcement of changing the names of the three cities was made by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma during the discussion on the state budget in the Rajasthan Assembly. The Chief Minister said in his speech that this decision has been taken keeping in mind the demand of local citizens, historical context and cultural significance. He assured that soon the process of name change will be completed by issuing an official notification in this regard.
After this decision of the government, an atmosphere of happiness is being seen in all three cities. Local people say that the new names will further strengthen their tradition and identity. Many organizations have called it a step to correct a historical mistake.
Opposition attacks government on name change
However, the opposition has tried to corner the government on this issue. The Congress Party did not directly oppose the name change, but raised questions keeping the issue of development at the forefront. Swarnim Chaturvedi, media in-charge and general secretary of Rajasthan Congress, has said that it is more important than changing the name to strengthen the basic facilities like roads, water, health and employment in these cities. They allege that the government is taking such decisions to divert attention from real issues.
At present, this decision of the government has started a new debate in the politics of the state and now everyone’s eyes are fixed on the official notification and further process.
