Meeting regarding security of Indian citizens
According to sources, it is believed that the safety of Indian citizens living in West Asia, as well as the safety of stranded people and ways to deal with the situation if it worsens, were discussed in the meeting. At present, the airspace of West Asia is almost closed. Escalating military tensions in West Asia have disrupted air services, leaving hundreds of Indians stranded in Dubai and other major airports. Many of these people are appealing for help from the Indian government on social media. According to sources, the meeting also took stock of the situation arising out of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian authorities, which is a major route for Indian oil carrier ships.
Indians living in Israel and Iran
About 10,000 Indian citizens live in Iran while more than 40,000 Indian citizens live in Israel. The number of Indians living in Gulf countries and West Asia is approximately 90 lakh. India has successfully evacuated thousands of Indians from various parts of the world, including West Asia, amid conflicts in the past. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that Indian embassies across the region are in constant touch with their citizens and helplines have been activated.
Death of Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei
Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei was killed in a major attack on Iran by Israel and America. Iran’s state television and state news agency ‘Islamic Republic News Agency’ (IRNA) announced the death of 86-year-old Khamenei early Sunday. These announcements were made after the joint aerial bombardment by the US and Israel that started on Saturday, in which Iran’s military and government targets were targeted. US President Donald Trump said that this has given the Iranians the biggest opportunity to take control of their country. Trump said that heavy and precise bombing will continue throughout the week or as long as necessary.
