How PCSK9 Inhibitors Lower Cholesterol: Cholesterol is a type of fatty substance which is present in our blood. Often people consider it only harmful, but the truth is that it also has an important role for the body. Cholesterol helps in forming the outer layer of cells and is also needed in the formation of many important hormones and Vitamin D. Apart from this, the body uses it to produce bile acids, which help in digesting the fat present in food. The problem starts when the level of cholesterol in the blood increases excessively.

What is the harm caused by increasing cholesterol level?

When bad cholesterol accumulates in large quantities in the blood, it gradually starts sticking to the inner walls of the blood vessels. Over time it accumulates and forms a thick and sticky layer, which is called plaque. This process is called atherosclerosis. As plaque increases, blood vessels become narrow and blood flow gets affected. In severe cases, it can cause complete blockage or blood clots, which can lead to life-threatening conditions like heart attack or stroke.

Why is it advised to take medicine?

Doctors often recommend medicines to reduce cholesterol. The purpose of these medicines is to reduce harmful cholesterol in the blood and prevent plaque formation in the blood vessels. The most commonly used medicines include statins. In addition, a new drug category, PCSK9 inhibitors, has emerged in recent years, which are prescribed for people who have high cholesterol levels or who do not get enough benefit from statins.

What came out in the research?

Researchers from the University of South Australia in Australia recently conducted a study in which an attempt was made to understand how these medicines affect the body. Research has found that both statins and PCSK9 inhibitors are very effective in reducing cholesterol and help in reducing the risk of heart diseases.

However, the researcher also came to know some interesting things. Some people taking statins showed mild changes in a part of the brain called the hippocampus. The hippocampus is the part associated with the ability to remember and learn. In some cases, this area was found to be slightly larger, which indicates that statins can have an effect on the brain as well. However, more research is still needed to fully understand this relationship.

Weight and body fat amount may increase

It was also observed in the study that in some people, the weight and amount of fat in the body may increase after taking statins. Apart from this, the level of testosterone hormone was found to be slightly low in some men. Testosterone is an important hormone associated with energy, muscle strength and mood, so changes in its levels cannot be ignored. At the same time, in the study related to PCSK9 inhibitors, indications of some changes related to the functioning of the lungs were also found. However, scientists say that it is not yet clear whether these medicines are directly the cause of these changes or not, hence more research is needed on this.
