According to the mythology, Lord Suryadev revolves around the universe riding on his chariot of seven horses. Suryadev is not allowed to stop anywhere, but the horses attached to the chariot get tired due to continuous running and no rest. Seeing such condition of the horses, Sun God’s heart was moved once, after which he took the horses to the bank of the pond. They realized that if the chariot stopped, disaster would happen.

Then Suryadev left the horses there to drink water and rest. He added donkeys to the chariot. The donkeys had to work hard to pull the chariot of the Sun God. During this time the speed of the chariot slows down. Sun God completes the cycle in one month. Meanwhile the horses also took rest. After this the Sun’s chariot again returns to its speed. In this way this sequence continues every year.
