Russia Ukraine War: The world is currently sitting on such a pile of gunpowder, where on one hand the fierce war between Iran, Israel and America in West Asia is in its 11th day, while on the other hand the Russia-Ukraine war in Europe has entered its fifth year. It seems as if the screams coming from Ukraine have been drowned out by the noise of exchange of missiles between Tehran and Jerusalem, but the reality is that the Russia-Ukraine war, which started on 24 February 2022, has so far caused so many wounds that memories of the Second World War have become fresh. Amidst the death of lakhs and displacement of crores, this conflict has now become a defeat not only of two countries but of humanity.

The scary truth about Russia-Ukraine war and deaths

Four years have passed since the bloody conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The number of deaths that has come out during this period is heart-wrenching. Although it is difficult to give exact numbers on the battlefield, because both countries hide their military losses, but the estimates of international organizations are scary. Some time ago, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) had said that since 2022, about 3,25,000 Russian soldiers have been killed. At the same time, from Ukraine’s side this figure is estimated to be between 1,00,000 to 1,40,000, while officially President Zelensky has confirmed only 55,000 deaths.

Destruction of civilians and ruined cities

Along with the soldiers, this war has also not spared the common people. The United Nations has so far confirmed the deaths of more than 15,000 civilians in Ukraine. The real number may be many times higher because no accurate data is available from Russian-occupied areas like Mariupol. On the other hand, hundreds of civilians in the border areas of Russia have also lost their lives in Ukraine’s retaliatory attacks. Many cities in eastern and southern Ukraine, such as Bakhmut and Toretsk, exist on maps today only in the form of ruins.

pain of displacement

This war has not only taken lives but has also made crores of people homeless. According to UNHCR data, about 59 lakh Ukrainian refugees are forced to live abroad, while 37 lakh people are wandering from place to place within their own country. The most painful aspect is related to children; Ukraine claims that Russia has forcibly abducted about 20,000 children and sent them to the areas under its occupation. This displacement has become one of the greatest humanitarian tragedies in modern history, which has left millions of families scattered forever.

landmine network

The land of Ukraine is now spewing not only crops but also death. Nearly one-fifth of the country has been contaminated by landmines and unexploded bombs. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there have been more than 2,800 attacks on hospitals and health centers since 2022. The way Russia has targeted Ukraine’s energy facilities, millions of people are forced to live without electricity and heating in the harsh winter. It will take decades and trillions of dollars of investment to fix this infrastructure waste.
