Can Acrylic Nails Cause Skin Damage: Nowadays the trend of nail extensions and acrylic nails is increasing very fast. Long, shiny and stylish nails look very beautiful to many people. But experts believe that their repeated use can be harmful for skin and nails. Especially the UV light and some chemicals used in the process of applying them can increase health concerns.

What do experts say?

Oncology surgeon Dr. Jai R Anam told during an interview with HT that even though acrylic nails look beautiful and long lasting, there are some hidden risks associated with their use. He says that the problem is not directly related to acrylic nails, but to the process of applying them. In this process, a special powder and liquid substance is mixed and applied on the nails, which is then hardened under a UV lamp. This UV light can cause concern. According to experts, UVA rays can damage the DNA of skin cells. This damage increases over time and repeated exposure over a long period of time can increase the risk of skin problems. Doctors say that getting nail extension done occasionally is not considered very dangerous, but if a person gets this procedure done continuously for a long time then the risk can gradually increase.

Effect on skin also

Some research has also shown that placing hands under a UV lamp hundreds of times can have a negative effect on the skin. Apart from this, chemicals like formaldehyde and toluene are also found in many acrylic products, which can cause skin irritation or allergy. When these chemicals and UV rays interact together, there can be additional stress on the skin.

However, experts also believe that the risk can be reduced by taking some precautions. Applying sunscreen on fingers before getting nail extensions done is considered a good solution. Apart from this, the use of LED lamp instead of traditional UV lamp is considered relatively safe, because it contains less ultraviolet rays.

What things should be kept in mind?

Doctors also advise that it is better to limit nail extensions to special occasions rather than making them an everyday habit. Along with this, this procedure should always be done in a trusted salon only. Another common mistake people make is trying to remove acrylic nails at home. This can cause damage to the skin and nails, so taking the help of an expert to remove them is considered a safe way.
