Lakhs of youth of the country dream of becoming an IAS officer one day and working in the administrative service. It is generally believed that there is only one way to become an IAS and that is to pass the UPSC Civil Services Examination. But the truth is that there is another path to become an IAS. Many government officers can also join the IAS cadre through promotion on the basis of their experience and work. However, this path is not easy and many conditions have to be fulfilled for it.
UPSC exam is most popular
The most direct and popular way to become an IAS is through UPSC. Every year lakhs of students appear in this examination, but only a few of them are successful. This examination is conducted in three phases.

Candidates who pass these three stages are sent to LBSNAA located in Mussoorie for training. After completion of training, they are given administrative responsibilities in different states and districts of the country.
IAS can also be made from State Civil Service
Very few people know that State Civil Service officers can also become IAS through promotion. This is usually called the path of promotion from PCS to IAS. UP PCS in Uttar Pradesh, State Administrative Service in Madhya Pradesh, other states also have similar administrative services, officers selected in these services initially work on posts like SDM, Deputy Collector and gain administrative experience in the districts.

After how many years can one get promotion?
Generally, after completing 10 to 12 years of service, state service officers can be considered for promotion to IAS. But this promotion does not come automatically. There are many necessary conditions for this and the entire process happens as per the prescribed rules. Many important things are considered in the process of becoming IAS from PCS.

- It is necessary to have vacant posts in IAS cadre.
- State government’s recommendation is important

How is it decided who will get the chance?
IAS promotion is decided by the selection committee. This committee usually includes the Chief Secretary of the state, senior IAS officer, representative of UPSC. This committee closely examines the service records, confidential reports and work of the officers, only after this it is decided which officers will be promoted to the IAS cadre.
