A natural sugar called lactose is found in milk. To digest it, the body needs an enzyme called lactase which is produced in the small intestine. When the amount of this enzyme decreases in the body, lactose is not able to escape properly. In such a situation, after drinking milk, problems like gas, flatulence, pain or diarrhea may occur.

Common symptoms of lactose intolerance
If a person starts having stomach problems after consuming milk or milk products like cheese, lassi or other dairy products, then it can be a sign of lactose intolerance. Some of its common symptoms may be gas formation in the stomach, flatulence or feeling of heaviness, stomach pain or cramps, loose motion or diarrhea, nausea or vomiting. These symptoms can usually appear within 30 minutes to 2 hours after drinking milk.
Which people may have more problems with milk?
Not every person has a problem with drinking milk, but in some people this problem is seen more. People who have weak digestive system or who already have problems related to gas, acidity or stomach. They may have difficulty digesting milk. Apart from this, with increasing age the ability to digest milk decreases in many people. In some cases, stomach related problems may increase after drinking milk due to intestinal related diseases.
Is it necessary to drink milk?
Experts believe that mother’s milk is most important for children and it fulfills their needs for about 6 to 7 months. After this the child gradually starts taking solid food. However, milk is considered a part of our diet and culture and many people take it as a good source of protein.
