‘An innocent person was put in jail for 6 months…’, AIMIM leader Waris Pathan said on the release of Sonam Wangchuk

AIMIM leader Waris Pathan has also expressed happiness over the Home Ministry’s cancellation of the detention of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA). At the same time, while cornering the Central Government, he asked that you have put an innocent person in jail for 6 months, who will compensate for this?

AIMIM leader Waris Pathan said, “It is a matter of great happiness that environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk has been released from Jodhpur jail. The government removed the law imposed against him. So I would like to ask who will compensate the six months spent in jail by Sonam Wangchuk, who was innocent. He is a role model, on whom the film ‘Three Idiots’ was also made, if you remember.

Wangchuk was demonstrating constitutionally – Pathan

He further said, “This is the kind of person who was fighting so hard for the climate issue. He was demonstrating constitutionally. You impose such strict sections on them and put them in jail, then after 6 months they are released. It is a matter of great happiness that he was released but my question on the government’s policy is that you put an innocent person in jail for 6 months. We would also like that the government should also release other people of Ladakh who were put in jail during the protests.

Home Ministry cancels Wangchuk’s custody

The Union Home Ministry issued a statement on Saturday (March 14) saying that after deliberations, the government decided to cancel the custody of Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect. The ministry also said that the government reiterates its commitment to provide all necessary measures for the security of Ladakh.

Wangchuk was detained on September 26 last year

There was a violent protest in Leh on 24 September 2025.
