Terrible accident changed life

Let us tell you that Harish Rana, who was once a promising engineering student, after a terrible accident reached a condition where he could neither speak, walk nor understand the world around him. In the language of doctors, it is called permanent vegetative state. Harish’s life, which survived with the help of machines and medical support for 13 years, has now reached the turning point of a decision which has sparked discussion in the entire country. Considering his condition, the Supreme Court has given permission for passive euthanasia i.e. removal of life saving equipment. This decision is not only extremely painful for a family but has also become an important example for the laws related to the last stage of life in India.

13 years long pain and wait

Harish Rana was in permanent vegetative state for the last 13 years. That means his body was alive but his brain was in an almost inactive state. During this time, his entire life was going on with the help of medical support and tubes. This time was very difficult for the family. The father said that we have spent 4588 days with this pain, but taking the decision to remove his son’s life support equipment is even more difficult.

Supreme Court gives permission for passive euthanasia

After hearing the case, the Supreme Court allowed passive euthanasia in the case of Harish Rana. The court gave this decision keeping in mind the reports of several medical boards and the consent of the family. The court directed that Harish be admitted to the Palliative Care Department of AIIMS, Delhi and a complete plan should be prepared there for the care of the last phase of his life.

Now life saving equipment will be removed

According to the doctors, after the court order, Harish’s life saving equipment will be gradually removed. This process will be done in a very sensitive and humane manner so that the dignity of the patient is maintained. The court also clarified that nutrition given through PEG tube also comes under the category of medical treatment and its removal would be considered within the scope of passive euthanasia.
