India-Canada Trade: India is targeting to get about 44 percent of its production from Karnalyte Potash Project (Karnalyte Resources Inc) in Saskatchewan, Canada. If this happens, the country will get about 275,000 tons of potash every year.
Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (GSFC) has invested approximately $ 49.68 million in Kernlite Resources Inc. In such a situation, its stake in Wynyard Potash Project is 47.73 percent. Karnalyte’s Wynyard potash project in Canada is expected to operate for the next 70 years. This means that India will continue to get food security for a long time.
India is making plan B’
There is a direct connection between India’s goal of acquiring a large share of potash from Canada and the war in Iran. In fact, India imports many fertilizers like urea on a large scale from Gulf countries, which comes through the Strait of Hormuz. India is worried that if the supply on this route is disrupted due to Israeli and American attacks on Iran, there may be a shortage of fertilizers in the country. India’s investment in Canadian projects is important for the safety of its farmers. We can also see this as India’s ‘Plan B’ for fertilizers.
Why is import from Canada necessary?
Imports from Canada to India take place via the Pacific Ocean. This has nothing to do with tensions in the Middle East. India imports about 25 percent of its potash requirement from Canada. By investing in Canadian projects, India wants to reduce its dependence on war zones like Russia-Ukraine or the Middle East for fertilizers. Potash is used for everything from plant protection to enhancing its taste and nutrition.
