Why Do Socks Leave Marks On Your Ankles: After wearing socks all day, when we take them off, we often see light marks around the ankles. In most cases this is absolutely normal. Due to the slight pressure of the elastic of the socks, marks are formed on the skin for some time and they disappear on their own within a few minutes. But if these marks are deeper, persist for a longer time or appear along with swelling in the legs, then doctors recommend seeing it as a signal from the body.
Sometimes this may indicate a problem related to blood circulation or fluid balance in the body. However, marks from socks alone are not a sure sign of any disease. The real thing is how often these marks appear, how deep they are and whether other symptoms are present along with them or not.

Why does the problem arise?
Actually, the skin of the lower legs is soft and gets compressed easily under pressure. When socks apply pressure to the feet for several hours, a slight depression forms on the skin. Usually, this mark disappears soon after removing the socks. But if there is slight swelling in the legs, then the same pressure presses the fluid accumulated under the skin, due to which the marks can appear deeper and longer. Doctors call this condition peripheral edema, in which fluid starts accumulating in the tissue around the feet and ankles.
What do experts say?
According to Vascular Surgeon Dr. Varun Bansal, many times the patients first notice the deep marks of the socks and later they come to know that there is a problem related to blood circulation in the legs. According to him, if the marks on the socks appear dark again and again, it could be a sign of conditions like poor blood flow, fluid retention or venous insufficiency. In venous insufficiency, the veins of the legs are not able to send blood back to the heart properly, due to which swelling starts in the lower part.
This problem is seen more in some people. Such as people who work sitting or standing for a long time, whose lifestyle is very less active, or who have problems related to heart, kidney or diabetes. Keeping the legs still for a long time slows down the blood flow and fluid starts accumulating in the legs.
You can avoid it by these methods
Doctors say that if there are problems like heaviness, swelling, change in skin color or pain in the feet along with the marks of socks, then it should not be ignored and a doctor should be consulted. However, the good thing is that some easy habits can help in maintaining better blood circulation. Regular walking, resting with feet elevated, maintaining a healthy weight and not wearing very tight socks can be helpful in this.
