Former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) chief HD Deve Gowda on Wednesday hit back at a comment made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in Parliament. Deve Gowda said that she had a forced marriage with the Congress and had to divorce it due to an abusive relationship.
What did Mallikarjun Kharge say?
This debate started with a sarcastic comment by Kharge during the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha, which made the atmosphere of the House pleasant for some time. Taking a dig at Gowda for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kharge said that senior JD(S) leaders want a partnership with the opposition but want to marry with the BJP. ‘Love with us, marriage with Modi ji,’ Kharge quipped, drawing laughter from the entire House, and even the Prime Minister was seen smiling.
‘I was forcibly married to Congress’
Responding to Kharge’s comment, Deve Gowda posted on Gowda also clarified that Kharge was not present in the House when he made this comment as he had gone to Bengaluru for Ugadi celebrations.
Serious allegations against Congress
Referring to the collapse of the JD(S)-Congress coalition government in 2019, Gowda accused the Congress of not taking action against those responsible for the defection. He said, “Now everyone knows how many Congress MLAs joined BJP and who sent them.” Gowda insisted that he did not break the alliance. They separated themselves. They (Congress leaders) left me no option but to part ways with them and form a more stable alliance.
