Recently, Pakistani cricketer Abrar Ahmed remained the center of discussion, who was bought by Sunrisers Leeds team in The Hundred auction. No Pakistani player has played for IPL teams for a long time. What is the reason that Pakistani players no longer play in IPL and why BCCI does not allow this to happen. The Indian Premier League started in the year 2008 and that was the last season when Pakistani players were seen playing in the BCCI-run IPL.
Why don’t Pakistanis play in IPL?
No Pakistani player has played in IPL after 2008. On 26 November the same year, there was a terrorist attack in Mumbai, after which tension increased between India and Pakistan. Pakistani players were banned from IPL due to deteriorating political relations. BCCI has not allowed Pakistani cricketers to play in the Indian Premier League since 2009.
Azhar Mahmood played despite the ban
Pakistani cricketers were banned from IPL, but Pakistan’s legendary player Azhar Mahmood still played for Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab. How did this happen? Actually, Mahmood played for Punjab Kings (earlier Kings XI Punjab) in 2012-13 and played his last season for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2015.
Mahmood had taken British citizenship and being a British citizen, he was allowed to play in the IPL. In his IPL career, Mahmood played 23 matches and took 29 wickets and scored 388 runs. Well, now Pakistan has started its T20 league PSL, which started in 2016. On the other hand, BCCI does not allow any active Indian cricketer to play in any foreign league. That is why Indian cricketers are not seen playing in any franchise league of Pakistan, Australia or even England.
